Battle of the Blogs: June 2 to 6, 2008

Gloves
Zack and Miri

At SpoutBlog, Karina Longworth reports on the controversy brewing over the internet-released teaser trailer for Kevin Smith's forthcoming Zack and Miri Make A Porno: "Who knew web-only content was subject to MPAA approval?" she asks. Well, thanks to the research we did for this article on red-band trailers, we did, actually.

Gloves

A couple of weeks ago, Jonathan Marlow's "They didn't build their sales model for you" piece on indie film distribution at GreenCine Daily was a huge talking ago, and so Marlow has written a response to all the feedback. You can read that here, and check out the comments below, and also more blog reaction to the piece collected by A.J. Schnack at All These Wonderful Things.

Gloves

The folks at the Guardian's film site certainly provoked a lot of conversation this week when they got Clint Eastwood to respond to Spike Lee's criticisms of the racial balance in his films. What did Clint say? Well, among other things, he said "A guy like him should shut his face." Ouch.

Gloves
Peter Bart

Peter Bart, editor-in-chief at industry bible Variety, has historically been one of the most vocal critics of the film blog phenomenon. So what did he do this past week? Yup, he started his own film blog. Welcome to the blogosphere, Peter, the water's lovely and warm!

Gloves

Another interesting voice writing about film who appeared for the first time this week? Well, he's not a blogger exactly, but those clever types at McSweeney's just put up Maxim Gorky's review of the Lumiere brothers' early work, with the piece presented by none other than Walter Murch.

Gloves

More eloquent and cine-savvy writing popped up at the Wall Street Journal where Whit Stillman, sadly inactive since 1998's The Last Days of Disco, picks his five favorite books about Hollywood. (Incidentally, imdb reports that Stillman is in prep on a new movie!)

Gloves

Many bloggers seemed to have Sex last week, and not in a good way. A. J. Schnack at "All These Wonderful Things" as "What's Up with all the Hostility Toward Sex and The City?" He looks particularly at the anti-Sex venom of Jeffrey Welles and Karina Longworth.

Gloves

Scott Von Doviak's at Screengrab joined into the Sex frenzy with "In Other Blogs: Sex and Slavery Edition," a detailed look at the political questions raised by ignoring a cultural phenomenon: "Am I Neanderthal knuckledragger if I refuse to see this movie? And if I am, do I care?"
